Evan White scored the shootout winner as the Holy Heart Highlanders secured a 3-2 shootout victory against the Gonzaga Vikings in the championship game of this year’s Darryl Reid Memorial Tournament.
The Highlanders opened the tournament with a 4-2 win versus the Ascension Astros before a merciless defeat to the hands of the O’Donel Patriots. Holy Heart secured a playoff spot with a victory against the Holy Trinity Tigers, and proceeded to the championship game with a victory against the Queen Elizabeth Pioneers in the semi-finals.
Gonzaga went 4-0 in the round robin and semi-final rounds, including a thrilling 4-3 shootout victory over O’Donel in the semi-final game to advance to the finals.
The Highlanders have now won both major tournaments (Oktoberfest & Darryl Reid) of the 2014-2015 Metro High School Hockey season.
ST. JOHN’S, NL – The 29th Annual Darryl Reid Memorial Tournament kicks off today in Conception Bay South at the Robert French Memorial Stadium.
The tournament is in memory of Darryl Reid, a former student and hockey player at Queen Elizabeth Regional High School in Foxtrap, NL who died in the Ocean Ranger tragedy. Two other former students and Pioneers hockey players, Robert and Stephen Windsor, also died in the tragedy and have separate hockey trophies in their names at Queen Elizabeth.
