Abbotsford Heat contract terminated; will relocate after playoffs

Update – 2:55 pm Newfoundland Standard Time

A press conference has confirmed that the Abbotsford Heat are moving after the end of their Calder Cup Playoff run this season.

There was no mention of where the team will relocate, but there are several rumours that Glens Falls, New York is a leading candidate. The City of Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman said that another AHL team is still possible, although there will be “no subsidizing private enterprise” – it seems they are seeking more of a community aspect.

A rebranding and renaming of the arena from the “Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre” to  “Abbotsford Centre” was also announced.

The City of Abbotsford is terminating contract with the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat.

The Heat, using the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre since the 2009-2010 season, are second to last in attendance this season with an average of just 3,007 per game. Their parent club is the Calgary Flames.

A full media event is scheduled for tomorrow, April 15th 2014 at 10 am Pacific Time.
